Notice of Change in Directorship of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Moji

April 1, 2019

The Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Moji, announces the change in the directorship of the Museum. Shosuke Idemitsu left the position as Director of the Museum as of the end of March, 2019, and Sachiko Idemitsu has taken the new directorship of the Museum from April 1, 2019.

Message from New Director, Sachiko Idemitsu

The Idemitsu Museum of Arts was established in the Marunouchi district of Tokyo in October, 1966. In the previous year, the Moji Art Gallery was opened for the employees’ education in the Moji branch office of the Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., and this Gallery is the predecessor of the Museum in Moji.

The Museum was founded by Shouke Idemitsu in Moji, the birthplace of the company, to exhibit the art works collected by Sazo Idemitsu (1885-1981, also known as the founder of the Idemitsu Kosan, Co. Ltd.) as well as to introduce the historical documents of his personal history as a business person in 2000.

“True art and true business are mutually consistent in their beauty, their creations and their efforts, and neither of them make concessions in their dignity and strength.” (from Sazo Idemitsu, Fifty Years of “Respect for Human Beings”)

Based on this philosophy, Sazo often admonished himself in the light of works of art and explained to the employees how to be a person through art. Therefore, I feel that the Sazo’s collection has masterpieces of art which can heal people and show a graceful appearance filled with elegance to them.

Sazo loved Moji deeply, worked as the first president of the Moji Chamber of Commerce and Industry, started the Moji Minato Festival, took a leading role in opening of the Kanmon Tunnel, and had devoted himself for the development of Moji.

Shosuke Idemitsu, first director of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Moji, had respected the long and close relationship between Idemitsu and Moji and tried to foster the Museum as a place where the visitors can appreciate the works of art left by Sazo and feel and learn the way of living as a person reflecting Sazo’s belief in the “Respect for Human Beings” through art he cherished. He had worked to improve the exhibition environment and renovated and reopened the Museum in October of 2016.

I have succeeded Shosuke, my father, and become the second director of the Museum in Moji. Inheriting the thoughts of my grandfather and father, I am committed to keep the Museum as the place to enjoy and appreciate the Idemitsu Collection and feel the heart of Sazo just as it has been. And I hope the Museum to continue providing the visitors to the Mojiko Retrospective District the encounter with art which shakes their minds on every visit to the Museum.

We look forward to welcoming you at the Museum.
